Tastes Change But Carribean Cruises Remain On Top For Now
Cruise shipping has been almost remarkably resilient in the recession years: but you can always count on their loyal passengers to shake the industry up a bit when things start to make them bored. Tropical cruises have been on top of the industry for twenty five years now, accompanied by a more general Caribbean tourism boom. Between 1983 and 1993 the Caribbean market grew from 900,850 cruise passengers to 2.3 million. But whilst passenger numbers there remain steady, experienced cruisers looking for something new are increasingly heading for different climates and new cruisers put off by the heat are joing them. There is also a growing market for river-based cruises that provide ample landfall opportunities and sights beyond the endless expanse of water that characterise most cruises.
For Egypt cruises 2011 shows every sign of being a tipping point for growing passenger numbers and a continuation of 2010 market profits. The nile, amongst all river cruises, is one of the most obviously appealing. Egypt and northern Sudan are most densely populated along the Nile’s banks, and it is after all the world’s longest river. From the fertile Nile delta in the north, a journey along the river takes in a great cross-section of African terrain, and this is not to mention obvious landmarks like Cairo, the Great Pyramids and the Sphinx, all easily accessible by disembarking onto the fertile banks.
The heartland of the European cruise has always been the Mediterranean, but many northern hemisphere lines are venturing further north to attract different markets. The Scandinavian Fjords have seen healthy business in the last decade or so, but the importance of this location to the lines was most recently confirmed when Princess decided to sail two of their largest Caribbean liners in the area. The Baltic too is benefiting from the increased attention. To operators like Silverseas cruises 2011 is anticipated to be another year of growth. Meanwhile, on the Pacific side of North America, cruises to Alaska are growing such as those operated by Crystal cruises, though many alternatives exist.
